Odorless, slightly bitter taste, slightly soluble in water (1.14%, 25), but hardly soluble in ethanol. Soluble in dilute acid or alkali. [α]D+2.8(5mol/LHCl), [α]D+6.2(0.5mol/LNaOH). Long-term light will be colored. Co-heating with water produces a small amount of indole. Heating in the presence of sodium hydroxide and copper sulfate produces a large amount of indole. It is more stable when heated in the dark with acid, but it is extremely heated when it coexists with other amino acids, sugars, and aldehydes. Easy to decompose. When protein is decomposed with acid, tryptophan is completely decomposed.

Used for amino acid infusion. It is often used in combination with iron, vitamins, etc., and with VB6 to improve depression and prevent and treat rough skin disease; as an insomnia sedative and L-dopa for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It is carcinogenic to laboratory animals; it has adverse reactions such as nausea, anorexia, and wheezing. Avoid combined use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
